When a transformer fails, an analysis of the failure during a tear-down, in addition to identifying the root cause of failure, may often provide important information concerning the weaknesses of similar transformers in the fleet. Also, a tear-down of a retired transformer can provide insight into the long term reliability of similar transformer assets on an electrical distribution system. This knowledge can be used to direct maintenance and to create long term plans for existing assets. This tutorial will strive to describe the value of transformer forensic analysis and the controlled tear-down of transformers. Expert presenters will provide their recommendations, experiences and case studies related to the forensic process. During a portion of the tutorial your questions, related to forensic analysis, will be answered.

The expert presenters include:

  • Don Dorris; Nashville Electric Service
  • Anastasia O’Malley; Consolidated Edison of New York
  • Jude Beyerle; Louisville Gas and Electric and Kentucky Utilities (LGE & KU)
  • Darin Mitton; Doble Engineering Company
