The development of batteries has advanced so that it is now technically and economically feasible to store energy and then later supply the energy to the electric grid. Battery energy storage systems are being employed to replace gas-fired power plants, defer the installation of power lines, maintain system stability and provide black-start capability for generators. These battery systems are often used in conjunction with wind and solar generation plants to store the “green energy” for use when needed.

This tutorial will provide information on the importance and evolution of battery energy storage systems including the pros and cons of presently available technologies. Utility presenters knowledgeable in this subject will provide information on the application and motivation for their system. Installation and maintenance experiences for these storage systems will also be presented.
