In-depth Review of Insulating Fluids

Hosted by the Insulating Materials Committee
Monday, October 7, 2019 | 1:30 PM to 5:30 PM

The Insulating Materials tutorial will be an in-depth review of the various commercially available insulating fluids.  Information will include how they are manufactured or refined, comparison of characteristics, and suitability for use in various applications such as transformers, load tap changers, oil circuit breakers, capacitors and cables. Characteristics reviewed will include environmental impact, biodegradation, cooling characteristics, and flammability.

Some of the fluids will include:

  • Paraffinic mineral oils
  • Iso-paraffinic mineral oils from crude
  • Iso-paraffinic mineral oils from gas
  • Naphthenic mineral oils
  • Re-refined mineral oils
  • High viscosity mineral oils
  • Natural esters based on soybeans
  • Natural esters based on corn, rapeseed, sunflower, safflower
  • Synthetic esters
    • Polyol-esters (pentaerythritol)
    • Aryl phosphate esters
  • Synthetic hydrocarbons
    • Poly alpha olefins (polybutene)
    • Hydrocarbons from plant sugars
  • Alkyl-aromatics
    • Alkyl benzenes
    • Dodecyl benzene
  • Chlorinated aromatic hydrocarbons
  • Silicones
